Healthcare Energized through
Listening, Investigation, Opportunities and Services
Our Mission
Established in 2017, the HELIOS lab aims to cultivate the knowledge and workforce to create a more equitable healthcare system. We energize healthcare through...
Listening
HELIOS is committed to partnered learning by listening to perspectives from community members, health providers and future professionals through focus groups, questionnaires and community forums. We also examine interactions between doctors and patients during medical visits to learn how the right approaches to communicating about priorities, barriers and concerns contribute to better health outcomes.
Investigation
HELIOS is a Health Services Research lab, based in the UC Irvine Department of Family Medicine in partnership with the UC Irvine Program in Medical Education for the Latino Community (PRIME-LC). We bring students, community members and healthcare organizations together to unlock approaches that make healthcare more equitable. We learn again and again that "healthcare for all" requires more than making care more affordable. Healthcare must also be more responsive to the varying individual priorities and challenges of diverse patients with different stories, needs and strengths.
Opportunities
HELIOS is built on a central strategy: "We invest in young people. Young people change the world." Our impact depends on supporting the academic and career goals of future health professionals, scholars and leaders. Our undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, graduate, and medical students work with patients and providers in healthcare and community settings. They learn and use the tools of research to develop and answer important questions, and earn recognition for their ingenuity and efforts with funding, presentations, publications and awards. And we celebrate loudly when our rising stars reach their goals.
Services
The HELIOS lab brings the tools to answer the most interesting questions. With expertise in study design, research ethics, measurement, participant recruitment, data collection, statistical analysis and communications, we collaborate with partners in community settings, biotech companies and healthcare organizations to develop and support research and quality improvement projects.
